JEREZ, Spain- It has been for many years that Red Bull owner Dietrich Mateschitz wanted an important formula one team. It had been rumored for many seasons that the Austrian, who ran the most successful energy drinks company wanted an American formula one team, but that was never realized. But the failure to do so there, led to not only one team being created when the entrepreneur took over the hard luck Jaguar team, but went on to create another team, Toro Rosso.
So, on a wet Wednesday afternoon at this southern Spanish track, the Senior Red Bull team launched their newest Adrian Newey collection, the RB4 before many journalists and photographers in attendance.
Considering that the car was soon out onto the track afterwards due to the current testing of other teams, Red Bull manager Chris Horner was happy that the car came out alright.
“It is always a key moment to see a new car run for the first time,” commented the Englishman.
“And particularly in the case of the RB4, that first lap represents a monumental amount of work from the entire workforce. Over the last few weeks, all the departments have made Herculean efforts to get the car ready for this shakedown today.” He concluded.
The team will return with its former driver line up, which is one of the oldest on the formula one calendar.
David Coulthard will be back for another year, while Australian sensation Mark Webber is in his Second year as well. As for the test driver, Swiss driver Sebastian Buemi will fill this roll for the first time.
For Coulthard, who is one of the oldest drivers on the grid today, had plenty to say about the opening of his new racecar.
“It is great to see a new car come together.” Said Coulthard.
“Inevitably, a lot of parts were still arriving last night, so when I left for my bed, it looked a little bare. But this morning, it was all in its glory. It looks super with lots of nice detail on it and given that it did it’s installation lap and came back to the garage, so far we have achieved our targets!!” joked the Scot.
The veteran driver has a lot to laugh about, given the fact that he has come close to being left for nothing by other teams, where this one will give him a lifeline. But the goal for the team is to pass Williams in the constructor’s championship and get even with Renault, which the team has the same works engines to race with.
