Clossey, Lawver, Rachel Sparkman and Howie Ware Capture Feature Wins

Loves Park, IL-The attention would eventually turn to the Champions on Whelen NASCAR Championship Night at Rockford Speedway on Saturday Night. First there was unfinished business for a few drivers as they set out to capture that elusive feature victory of 2012. Female competitor Rachel Sparkman was the first to reach that goal after holding off Kyle Lapier in American Short Tracker action and Matthew Clossey waited out an hour and a half rain delay to record his first career Late Model triumph. Sportsman honors went to Scott Lawver who recorded feature victory one hundred and two and Howie Ware raced his way to the front of the strong RoadRunner field for the win. Once the final checkered flag was waved, the Champions and Rookie of the Year recipients took over the Speedway in celebration. Jerry Gille became a three time Late Model titlist, a second Championship was won by Doug Bennett in the Sportsman, Bobby Frisch in the RoadRunners and Jason VanHise in the RoadRunner Challenge. A first time Champion was also crowned as Joey LaMarca bested the talented American Short Tracker field. Austin Nason was the Late Model Rookie of the Year and Johnny Robinson II capped his Rookie of the Year campaign with another strong Sportsman showing.

Matthew Clossey has been close to victory on multiple occasions only to see it slip out of his grasp. It nearly did again as Clossey shot to the lead inside of front row starting mate Wayne Freimund and set sail. But the race’s only caution, this for a nearly hour and a half rain delay allowed Matt Berger to restart inside of Freimund as the field raced back to the green flag with thirteen circuits remaining. By the next lap Berger was in second and pressing Clossey for the lead, lap twenty saw Berger ahead at the stripe but some contact and a slip allowed Clossey to charge to the inside once again and recapture the lead. Last week’s winner Jake Gille then looked for a way around Berger for second as fast qualifier Jon Reynolds, Jr peeked to Freimund’s inside for fourth. Contact on the final lap sent Freimund for a wild ride in the final turn, dropping Reynolds in the final tally. Clossey, Berger and Gille were joined by Freimund and Jake’s uncle Jerry Gille in the final top five. This was Late Model career win number one for Clossey who became the fourteenth different winner this season. With Jerry Gille’s finish, the three time Champ finished in the top ten of all nineteen NASCAR Stanley Steemer features.

Six time track Champion Scott Lawver worked his way beneath early leader Bob Moeller and after four laps of swapping the top spot, he secured it by halfway and held off two Moeller advances to capture his one hundred and second Bargain Hunter Sportsman feature victory, this one which went caution free. Moeller settled for second, his best Rockford effort. The battle amongst the remainder of the top ten was intense with Rookie of the Year Johnny Robinson II working the low line a moving into third around Justin Sellers with two laps remaining and Doug Bennett bested fast qualifier Matt Lundberg at the finish for a top five showing.

Rachel Sparkman took advantage of the high line and brought her dad George along for the ride as they shot past Keith Pierce two laps into the caution free contest. Daughter and father were the class of the field with former Champion Kyle Lapier, Nick Cina and fast qualifier Joey LaMarca in tow. A mechanical gremlin changed the complexion of the race on lap twenty as the elder Sparkman’s machine fell off the pace, allowing LaPier the chance to duck inside of Rachel Sparkman for the win. Sparkman held on in order to record her first victory of the season, Lapier settled for second followed by Cina, LaMarca and a hard charging Zach Rodriguez.

The RockStar Energy RoadRunner feature also went caution free and saw Linnea Lundy, Lloyd Hawkins, Kyle McQuality and Alex Chabucos, who had earlier been on two wheels take turns leading. With six laps left, Howie Ware moved from his seventeenth starting position to take command of the field. Ware never looked back as front point men Bobby Frisch and Dennis Smith, Jr jostled for the runner-up spot. Smith wound up second, he was pursued to the line by Frisch, followed by Chabucos and Double Spin to Win winner Adam Cartwright.

Action continues next Saturday Night at Rockford Speedway with the Night of Thrills featuring the Monster Trucks on Big Dawg and TailGator, the Green Mamba Jet Car and Ferris Wheel of Destruction.
