On another fine night for motor-car racing, two points champions were crowned with the other four divisions having another two weeks to determine their champs. As hard as it is to think that there’s only a couple of nights left in the 2012 racing season as it seems like it was just last week that it started, there has been plenty of good clean competition this summer with more yet to come! COSCO HAULAGE DIRTcar Sportsman: Coming into tonight’s racing, Cody McPherson had a slim four point lead over Greg Panunte meaning that Panunte would have to finish at least three spots ahead of McPherson to take the championship. With Championship points on the line, starting on the front row was Jeff Armstrong with Dave Flannigan,Jr. beside him and coming out of turn two with the early lead was Armstrong, but his progress was immediately slowed by a yellow flag for a triple spin by Gary Lindberg, Paul Jorgenson and substituting for Joey Mastroianni, veteran Doug Fralick. Another two laps later after the restart, Armstrong’s progress was slowed again for rookie Travis Miller backing the Miller Motorsports #22 into the front stretch wall, breaking off the right front wheel in the process, ending his night early. This put a pair of Port Colborne drivers on the front row, Armstrong and Adam Leslie with a pair of Americans right behind them, Mark Chiddy and Adam Hilton. On the green, Leslie took the lead away from Armstrong down the backstretch, but at the line, it was Chiddy with the lead that he would not relinquish. Leslie tried to wrestle the lead away from Chiddy but to no avail. Meanwhile, back in the pack, McPherson and his cousin, B J Willard were making a charge up through the field while Panunte was having a hard go trying to make any headway. At the finish,it was Chiddy with his second win of 2012 with Leslie second and McPherson third. Fourth was Willard with Brad Rouse fifth. With the finish the way it was, McPherson is the 2012 points champion over Panunte by eighteen points. Heat winners were Flannigan, Willard and Armstrong. PETERS EXCAVATING FASTRAK Late Models: Championship points were also in order Peters Excavating Late Models and coming into tonight, the points battle in this division was the closest of all six with Adam Ferri a slim two points over Jorden Peters with Darren Peters sixteen points after that, making it anybody’s championship to win. Starting on the initial front row was Kenny Winfield with Dean Ferri along side but before anybody could get any advantage coming down the backstretch, Winfield spun in front of the pack, with Tim Gillespie winding up on the hood of the #82 with Darren Peters and Adam Ferri wedged in behind them. This meant a complete restart with all the cars involved in the wreck moving to the rear of the field putting Jorden Peters on the front row with Dean Ferri. On the start, with a bonzai move going through turns one and two, it was the veteran Ed Carley grabbing the early lead, but just as quickly, the yellow came out again on the next lap for a collision between A. Ferri and Bill Gill with Scott Spiece, subbing for Don Spiece, spinning to avoid contact. With another three caution periods after the first two, Jorden Peters was able to grab the lead away from Carley on lap three and hold off all challengers, including his father who wound up bringing out the last caution period on lap 8 with a spin, to pick up his second win of 2012 and also the first championship of his career. Carley would hang on to finish second with Darren coming back from the spin to finish third. Fourth was Adam Ferri with Luke Carleton, in his first start of 2012 was fifth. Heat winners were D. Peters and Carley. J C AUTO Street Stocks: Starting on the front row was Tyler Anderson with Jordan Fidler along side him and on the green flag it was Anderson outracing Fidler into turn one to grab the early lead. It would be a short-lived lead as Paul Reichel would motor on by Anderson on the next lap and then hold off all challengers to record his fifth win of 2012. With Reichel holding an commanding lead for most of the race, all the action was behind him with Jason Fontaine, who was looking for his fourth straight win tonight, Kevin Knapp, Shawn Wilson and Anderson having a fierce battle for the second spot, waiting for Reichel to make some kind of mistake. In the later going, Knapp and Fontaine did manage to break away from Anderson and Wilson and gain some ground on Reichel and on lap eighteen, Reichel bobbled just enough to allow the other two Camaros to get close, but at the stripe, it was Reichel picking up the win with Knapp second and Fontaine third. Fourth was Anderson with Wilson fifth. Heat winners were Wilson and Reichel. NIAGARA AUTO SALES Pro 4 trucks: Starting on the front row was about the most diverse pair of drivers in the class, the rookie Jamie Ayers with 36 year veteran Andy Imbeault along side of her.On the start, Hilary Haegens’ race ended before it had a chance to start as the engine made a huge bang and she rolled to a stop off of turn one. I’m not sure what happened going into turn two but Ayers spun in front of the pack collecting Adam Williams, Colton Ledingham and Adam Nicholls with Nicholls done for the night. This put Greg Haegens up beside Imbeault and Haegens wasted no time in taking the lead away from the”Flyin’ Frenchman”and settled into the lead. With all the action on the first lap, Mike Toovey moved up from where he was supposed to start, ninth, to the third spot and on the eighth lap grabbed the lead away from Haegens. Haegens and Lee Sleight were then engaged in a tight battle for the second spot with Imbeault and all was going good for Haegens until the unlucky thirteenth lap.Haegens came up to the lapped truck of Ayers and they came together with both of them spinning, bringing out the last caution of the race, setting up for a two lap “dash for cash”. Sleight tried to get around Toovey, but to no avail with Toovey picking up his fourth win of 2012. Sleight would settle for second with Imbeault third, Craig Vlasic fourth and Danny Wurster fifth. Heat winners were Williams and Hilary Haegens. WEEKEND MOTORSPORTS Mini Stocks: Starting on the front row was rookie Tyler Lafantaisie with one of my “wedding chapel” cars, Garnet Wilson, along side of him. To further explain, if you didn’t know, this writer was married last week at Merrittville Speedway and we had one car from each division there to make like a “wedding chapel” and Wilson was the representative from the Mini Stocks. On the green, it was Wilson taking the early lead coming out of turn two and he would go on to take his first win of 2012. It wasn’t as easy as all that though as he had to fight off a determined Rob Overholt in the latter part of the race. Behind those two, Lafantaisie was having a good battle with fellow rookie Steve Vanderzanden and Evan Curtis. At the finish it was Wilson for the win, Overholt was second with Vanderzanden third. Fourth was Lafantaisie with Curtis fifth. Heat winners were Aaron Wiley and Vanderzanden. FRONTIER AUTO DISMANTLERS Pure Stocks: Starting up front on the pole was Brad Alward with Mike Greene on the outside and on the drop of the green flag, it was Greene taking the lead going into turn one.he would hold the lead for the first four laps until he was passed by Leroy Buscumb. Buscumb would hold the lead for the next five laps until he had a flat tire on the right rear. He headed to the pits, giving the lead back to Greene for the next two laps, when Greene bobbled and Brad Booker was right there to take advantage, grabbing the point, surviving the only caution of the race on lap thirteen and taking his third win of 2012. Greene would hang on to second and Kyle Rothwell was third. Fourth was Olivier Larocque and fifth was Sam Iftody. Heat winners were Greene and Kyle Tomaski. Next week, there won’t be any racing on our regular Friday night, but there will be racing on Sunday at 7:15 with the Trevor Wilkens Memorial DIRTcar Sportsman Fall Tour race, a New Humberstone Speedway Weekly series AND the last 30 lap EVE OF DESTRUCTION qualifier!
