Mother nature hasn't been to kind to the racing world so far in the early part of the 2017 season, and that was evident on Saturday at 34 Raceway. Close to 5 inches of rain fell on the grounds in the days prior to opening night, which resulted in it being very wet and soft. But thanks to the efforts of Jeff Laue, Ryan Parrish and many other workers and volunteers throughout Friday afternoon and all day Saturday, they were able to get things worked in to bring the fans the opening races for the Shottenkirk.com Sprint Invaders and Deery Brothers Summer Series for IMCA Late Models.

Thirty-three Sprint Cars and 31 Late Models signed in for the nights competition. Both the Sprint Cars and Late Models used 4 heat races and 2 B Mains to set their feature line-ups.

The 25 lap Shottenkirk.com Sprint Invaders feature was first to take to the track, with Tasker Phillips and his brother Rager Phillips leading the field to the drop of the green flag. Tasker Phillips would jump out into the lead on lap 1 over Rager Phillips and Carson McCarl. The lead trio then started to pull away from the rest of the field, and then entered heavy lapped traffic on lap 6. Coming off turn 4 on lap 11 Tasker Phillips slid high, which allowed Rager Phillips and McCarl to shoot under him for first and second. Two laps later, lap 13, Rager Phillips went high into turn 1 to clear a lapped car and ended up spinning off turn 1 to bring out the first caution of the race.

McCarl would inherit the lead on the restart, with Jon Agan over taking Tasker Phillips for the runner up spot. Agan tried to keep pace with McCarl, even as McCarl entered lapped traffic on lap 18. But McCarl looked to be heading to the win, when the red flag waved on lap 23 to set up a green-white-checkered finish. Sawyer Phillips flipped in turn 2 and Cody Wehrle tried to avoid him and also flipped to bring out the red. Both driver's climbed from their cars okay. On the restart McCarl moved back out front and then held on to claim his first win at 34 Raceway and the $1,500 top prize to go with it. Agan settled for 2nd, Jake Blackhurst was 3rd, Josh Schneiderman came from 10th to finish in 4th, with Ryan Jamison coming home in 5th.

Darrel DeFrance, the Iron Man of the Deery Brothers Summer Series, and Jay Johnson, who won the first ever series event at 34 Raceway back in 1987, drew the from row for the 35 lap IMCA Late Model feature. But just as the green flag waved the caution would come out, as Luke Goedert spun in turn 1 to bring out the yellow. On the following restart DeFrance would edge out Johnson at the line to lead lap 1. DeFrance then held the top spot until lap 6, when Nick Marolf slipped under him to grab the lead away. Marolf then set a torrid pace out front, despite starting to enter lapped traffic on lap 10. The action was slowed for the first time on lap 15, when Jeremiah Hurst slowed to a stop down the backstretch to bring out the yellow.

Marolf jumped back out front on the restart, with DeFrance and Matt Ryan, who started 7th, following. Once again Marolf's fast pace allowed him to pull away from the battle behind him, when the second caution appeared on lap 21 to slow down his pace. Jesse Sobbing, who was running 6th, slowed in turn 4 with a flat tire to bring out the yellow. Once again Marolf moved back out front on the restart, with Ryan over taking DeFrance for the runner up spot. One lap later, lap 23, Johnson, who was running 5th, slowed to a stop in turn 2 and Joel Callahan spun to avoid him to bring out the final caution of the race. Again Marolf grabbed the lead on the restart, with DeFrance getting back by Ryan for the runner up spot. Marolf then pulled away over the final 12 laps to pick up his second career series win, and first since September 2012, which was also worth $2,000. DeFrance held on for 2nd, Chad Holladay charged from 15th to finish in 3rd, Ryan was 4th, with defending series champion Tyler Bruening finishing 5th after starting in 11th.

Coming up next week, Saturday, April 8th, at 34 Raceway is the return of the Bumper to Bumper IRA Outlaw Sprint Series. It's been seven years since the IRA Outlaw Sprints made a stop at the 3/8th mile track. Also in action on the night will be the Victory Lane Suspension Modifieds, Pepsi Stock Cars, and Casebine Credit Union SportMods. The Modifieds, Stock Cars, and SportMods will be awarded track points, but will not be sanctioned.
